When the Utica Children’s Museum relocated to its historic Memorial Parkway location, it needed a custom monument sign that reflected both the creativity of the museum and the character of the building itself.
Located along Memorial Parkway in Utica NY, the new monument sign creates a bold first impression for both the Utica Children’s Museum and ICAN.
In early 2025, the Utica Children’s Museum partnered with Valley Signs to develop custom signage for its newly renovated historic location on Memorial Parkway in Utica. From the beginning, the Valley Signs team knew one element needed to stand out above the rest: the main monument sign positioned on the highly visible corner of the property.
The goal was to create a monument sign that not only captured attention on a busy roadway, but also reflected the museum’s mission of creativity, learning, and community engagement. From there, the Valley Signs design team collaborated with ICAN to create a monument style sign that successfully blended creativity, functionality, and architectural character.
Because the building is located within a historic district, approval from the local historical society was required. To satisfy those requirements while maintaining a cohesive design, Valley Signs matched the monument base to the existing stonework of the building. This approach not only complemented the architecture of the property, but also balanced the energetic and colorful branding of the Utica Children’s Museum.
The finished monument incorporated a variety of premium materials, including aluminum composite panels, dimensional flat cut aluminum lettering, and a textured stucco style finish designed to complement the historic architecture of the property.
Installation was completed just ahead of Utica’s iconic Boilermaker Road Race, allowing the new signage to serve as a prominent visual landmark during one of the city’s largest annual events. With assistance from CLS Construction on the concrete foundation, the installation process was completed seamlessly.
Beyond the featured monument sign, Valley Signs also designed and installed wayfinding signage, pole banners, and custom window graphics throughout the facility to improve visibility, accessibility, and the overall visitor experience.
